No refrigerator brand is categorically bad, but some product lines reach our dispatch board far more often than others. In our Greater Boston service history, the heaviest repair volume comes from feature-dense French-door models with through-door ice and water, where Samsung and LG units are heavily represented, chiefly for ice maker assemblies, evaporator frosting, and sensor faults. Budget-tier Frigidaire and Electrolux models draw complaints for control boards and gasket wear, and unbranded or short-lived imported compact refrigerators are the hardest category of all because replacement parts often do not exist two years after purchase. The pattern is consistent: the more dispensers, sensors, and screens a refrigerator carries, the more there is to fail.
That is a reason to shop carefully rather than to boycott a manufacturer. Samsung and LG both build reliable basic top-freezer and bottom-freezer units, and both have improved ice maker designs in recent model years. The risk concentrates in their most heavily featured flagship models.
What Actually Predicts a Problem Refrigerator
- Through-door ice and water. This single feature adds a water line, an inlet valve, a dispenser actuator, a chute heater, an auger motor, and an ice maker assembly inside the fresh food compartment. It is the most repair-prone subsystem in modern refrigeration.
- In-door ice makers. Placing the ice maker in the door rather than the freezer requires its own cooling duct, which frosts and fails far more often than a freezer-mounted module.
- Touchscreens and app connectivity. A failed display board can disable temperature control entirely on some models, turning a cosmetic fault into a no-cooling call.
- Proprietary single-source parts. If only the manufacturer sells a board, a back-order means weeks without a refrigerator.
- Very low purchase price on a large unit. A $700 counter-depth French-door model has cut cost somewhere, usually in the gasket, hinges, and control electronics.
The Parts Support Problem Nobody Checks Before Buying
Repairability depends far more on parts availability than on build quality, and it is the thing buyers almost never research. Whirlpool-family brands, GE, and Bosch maintain deep North American parts channels, so a ten-year-old unit is usually still serviceable within days. Sub-Zero and Viking support models for decades by design.
At the other end, discount imports and discontinued private-label lines sold through big-box clearance can become unrepairable almost immediately. We regularly diagnose a $160 fault on a three-year-old compact refrigerator and find the module has no supply chain at all, which strands the owner with a replacement purchase.
What to Buy Instead if Reliability Is the Priority
Buyers who want the fewest service calls tend to land in the same place:
- Skip the through-door dispenser. A freezer-mounted ice maker or an ice tray eliminates the single largest failure category.
- Choose bottom-freezer or top-freezer over side-by-side when the kitchen layout allows, since there is simply less hardware.
- Favor brands with strong local parts depth: Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, GE, and Bosch all score well on repair turnaround in Boston.
- For built-ins, buy serviceability: Sub-Zero and Thermador cost more upfront but are engineered for twenty-plus years of repair.
- Measure the opening before anything else. In older Boston homes the wrong depth is a more expensive mistake than any brand choice.

We Repair Every Brand, Including the Difficult Ones
Whatever is in your kitchen, it is almost certainly serviceable. Our technicians carry manufacturer diagnostic procedures for Samsung Twin Cooling and LG linear compressor platforms, and we stock the ice maker assemblies, inlet valves, and evaporator fan motors that those units actually need.
If you own a flagship Samsung or LG French-door refrigerator, our Samsung and LG specialists handle error-code diagnostics and sealed system work. For built-in refrigeration see our Sub-Zero service, and for everything else our refrigerator repair team dispatches same day across Greater Boston.
