Dryers are the most repair-favourable major appliance in the laundry room, and the reason is mechanical simplicity. A conventional dryer is a motor, a belt, a blower wheel, a heat source, a thermostat, and a rotating drum on rollers. There is no sealed refrigeration system, no transmission, no water pump, and no sealed tub bearing. The expensive, machine-ending failures that decide the fate of washing machines and refrigerators simply do not exist here. Typical repairs run $180 to $400 against $650 for a basic replacement, $900 to $1,400 for a mid-range unit, and $1,800 to $2,800 for Speed Queen or a heat pump model, before delivery, installation, and any venting work.

There is one genuine exception. On a heat pump dryer, a failed sealed refrigeration system costs $700 to $1,300, which is the one dryer repair that can approach replacement cost.

The Threshold We Actually Use

Dryer ageRepair up toOur recommendation
Under 5 years$600Repair. May still be under warranty; check first.
5 – 10 years$450Repair. Comfortably inside normal service life.
11 – 14 years$320Repair. Covers nearly every common dryer fault.
Over 14 years$220Repair cheap, accessible parts only.
Speed Queen or commercial grade$800Repair. Built for 20 to 25 years.
Heat pump dryer, sealed system faultJudgment call$700 to $1,300; weigh against the unit value.
Stacked or closet-installed, any ageAdd $150 to the capReplacement labor is materially higher.
Matched pair, washer still goodAdd $100 to the capReplacing one often forces replacing both to fit.

Notice how generous the $320 cap at eleven to fourteen years is relative to the fault list. A thermal fuse, element, belt, roller set, or door switch all sit below it, which is why we so rarely tell people to replace a dryer.

Why Dryers Outlast Washers by Three Years

A dryer averages twelve to fifteen years against ten to thirteen for a washing machine, and the gap comes down to four absences:

  • No water circuit. No inlet valves, no drain pump, no hoses to burst, no scale, no corrosion from standing water.
  • No wet load on the bearing. A washer spins forty pounds of saturated laundry at high speed; the bearing load on a dryer drum is a fraction of that, which is why dryer drum bearings rarely end a machine.
  • No transmission or gearbox. A single belt drive from one motor.
  • Lower peak loads. No spin cycle, so no repeated unbalanced high-speed events.

Which also explains the practical asymmetry: when half of a matched pair fails terminally, it is usually the washer. Full figures are on how long do dryers last on average and washing machine lifespan.

The Replacement Costs People Forget

Sticker price understates replacement in Boston, often substantially:

  1. Delivery and installation: $100 to $300. More for a walk-up, a basement, or a building needing a freight elevator booking.
  2. Haul-away: $25 to $75.
  3. Venting work: $150 to $600. New dryers often have the exhaust port in a different position, and a retrofitted duct in an older building rarely adapts easily.
  4. Gas line adaptation: $150 to $450, licensed gas fitting, if the connection point moves.
  5. Electrical: $200 to $600, if you change from gas to electric and need a 240V circuit, or from a 3-prong to a 4-prong cord configuration.
  6. Stacking kit: $60 to $200, brand-specific, so a brand change forces a new one.
  7. Possibly replacing the washer too, if the pair is stacked or the footprints no longer match.

Added up, a $750 dryer frequently becomes $1,200 installed, which makes a $350 repair look very different.

When Replacing Is the Right Call

We do recommend replacement in these situations:

  • Drum or cabinet rust-through. Structural, and it will snag laundry.
  • A heat pump sealed system failure on a unit worth less than about $1,400.
  • A discontinued control board with no aftermarket equivalent.
  • Two major faults at once past year fifteen.
  • You are moving from vented to ventless deliberately, which is a legitimate reason in a building where the vent run cannot be fixed.

Short of those, repair. For a firm number, book through washer and dryer repair, or see component pricing on how much does it cost to repair a dryer and the Boston pricing guide.
